RICHVIEW REVIEW

MESSAGE FROM THE PRINCIPAL

We've had a wonderful school year! The energy from the students and teachers as they work together on the myriad of co-curricular activities that this school is famous for has been exciting. The enthusiasm has contributed to an upbeat, positive school.

We hope you were able to join us at a music concert, a sporting event, our drama production, The Crucible, our Arts Night or our Fashion Show to personally appreciate the high calibre of our students, in their many and varied activities.

In March, nearly 300 students and staff went to Muskoka Woods for four days to participate in a student leadership experience where our grade nine students were mentored and coached by senior student counsellors who had been taught and prepared by our teachers throughout the year. The outcome of this wonderful experience was a development of pride in self, in school, and a real sense of Richview family and community. Plans are already underway for another Muskoka Woods experience for our new grade nines next year.

There will be several staff changes as teachers retire or move on to positions at other schools. The retirees are: Michael Frederiksen, Vice Principal; Halla Jones, Librarian; Eric Lang and Terry Spratt, English teachers; and Ric Hollowell, Physical Education teacher. Ina Anthony, Adelita Arapi, Ian MacDonald, Nina Silver, Chris Chanook and Mandy Holowatch are moving on to teaching positions in other schools.

Included in this package is a communique from Janice Marshall, Chair of our School Council. We bid farewell to Janice as she retires from this position after many years of service. Under her leadership and dedication, greater understanding and support has been built between parents and staff at Richview. Thank you Janice for the excellent work you have done for us all.

I wish our students, school staff and their families a restful, joyful summer.

See you in September!

STUDENT COUNCIL 2001-2002

For all students the last four months can easily be described in a single word: busy. Students have been preparing for ISUs, Midterms, Summative Evaluations, and exams. While this was occurring the student council planned many events in order to provide some entertainment. The enthusiasm brought by Muskoka Woods Leadership Week quickly transferred to events such as the Aerobathon for the Heart and Stroke Foundation organized by charity convener Meaghan Aalto, as well as Niousha Foad Ghazni and Margaret Hunter. Fun Lunch was yet another event in which students had an opportunity to take a break and enjoy themselves. This extended lunch hour was full of inflatable games, talented musicians and bands, a bake sale and delicious burgers. Fun Lunch was organized by Vanessa Corlazzoli and it could not have been possible without the help of social convener Dan Duperrouzel, Bekki Cait, Trevor Kerr, and Jeff Gadway. The spring Spirit Assembly was hosted by Dave Senior and Paul Sturino in their "M&M" costumes. It showcased some of the best that Richview has to offer from sports achievements to comical videos. The Spirit Assemblies could have not been possible without the help of Adrian Suszko, and Trevor Kerr. The arts also flourished as Richview's students and staff displayed all their artistic abilities during the production of Arthur Miller's The Crucible, the third annual fashion show Delirium, and at Art's Night.

The graduating class made sure they enjoyed their time up until the last few days. The New York Grad Trip organized by Mr. Spratt offered the best of the very best from culture, entertainment, shopping, to the opportunity to represent Richview and the TDSB at the New York City Hall and the Canadian Consulate. The much anticipated formal planned and organized by Peter Stefanovich was held on June IIth at Hart House. Many thanks must go to Maria Bagovich and her mother who beautifully decorated the hall with elegant candelabras that set the perfect stage to crown our Prom King Alan Spencer and Prom Queen Jessica Eusebio. In the last week of school the graduating class also participated in a new event that was called Grad Day. During the past year the 2001-2002 Student Council Executive accomplished wonderful events and continued with memorable Richview traditions. They should all be very proud of themselves and their contribution to this school. We would like to thank all those who have stood by us during the year, especially Mr. Spratt. The student council wishes him the best of luck in his retirement. We also would like to wish the best of luck to the new student council that will be led by next year's SAC president Sarah Charles. At the end we hope that all students enjoyed their time at Richview as much as we did and we thank them for making the year memorable.

Vanessa Corlazzoli
Student Council President

IN THE DRIVER'S SEAT

In The Driver's Seat is winding down for another year; and what a year it was! Elaine Kanasewich, Claire Kanasewich, Claire McCamus and Bryony Smith did a wonderful job on the executive. From arm wrestling events to Dress in Black Day and from mocktails to Bring Your Own Banana, the In the Driver's Seat committee was busy every month. Our final event was a school-wide assembly held on May 22 in which we had a Motivational Media presentation entitled "180" as well as welcoming Kelly Grady (a victim of an impaired car crash) and Sergeant John Soffe to talk to the school of the dangers of driving impaired. The entire committee would like to wish Elaine, Claire, Claire and Bryony well in their future endeavours and would also like to announce our new executive for next year: to carry on the McCamus tradition, Holly McCamus, Eleni Philos, Darina Larga, and Caroline Seessle. We wish everyone a happy and safe summer.

NEW YORK

This year’s trip to the Big Apple marked an important milestone in Richview History. It was the last to be hosted by our very capable and enthusiastic Mr. Spratt. Nearly one hundred graduating students lived the life of Riley for three nights at the opulent Marriott Marquis, situated right on Times Square in the heart of Manhattan. After a nine-hour overnight bus ride, we were greeted by the Canadian Consulate and, in true Richview fashion, showered them with appreciative accolades for all their compassion and energy given re 9/11. Throughout the weekend, many visited ground zero, some of the many art museums, and Broadway shows. All soaked up the culture, eagerly visiting the places we have come across in Literature (we rode Holden’s carousel!). Mr. Spratt skillfully navigated the group around town, showing us not only the regular tourist attractions but also sights off the beaten track. Everyone managed to have unforgettable personal experiences! We convened for a group shot at Columbia University - one of Mr. Spratt’s Alma Maters. We would like to thank Mrs. Periera, Mrs. Miller, and Freddie for accompanying us on the trip, and most of all, Mr. Spratt for making this possible year after year. Kate Mior

Math World

Math World has had a very successful year, which really began in June 2001 when our grade nines wrote the EQAO. We were very pleased that our students did so well. In grade 11 this year, Jeremy Green, Claire Kuo and Mark Moon won the zone for the University of Waterloo Fermat contest. Jeremy was the individual zone winner and was invited to a special program at the University, which took place the week of June 10. In OAC, Steve Kuo, Emidio Tarulli and Margaret Hunter won the Descartes Contest. Steve scored an amazing (and unprecedented) 98%! Super work mathletes!

MUSIC

Richview's music department has had a very exciting year. The past three months have been especially busy. On April 23, we had our annual concert, "Symphonia 2002". This was a huge success as the concert was completely sold-out. Through ticket sales and Krispy Kreme Donuts fund raising, the students raised money for the music program to be used for future instrument and textbook purchases.

On May 15, music students returned from a very successful five-day music trip to Montreal. Students had opportunities to perform while away, as well as see performances by the Montreal Symphony Orchestra, McGill University student ensembles and Cirque du Soleil. Everyone had a terrific time while experiencing the rich culture and life of Montreal.

On May 30, Richview held its annual Arts Night, See Hear. Many music students were involved as they had opportunities to perform in various ensembles and display their talent. Parents and friends of Richview students who attended this evening heard music of many styles ranging from Classical and Jazz to Pop and Funk.

On June 7, grade 9 and 10 students in the Intermediate Concert Band and Grade 9 Strings Ensemble, participated in the Trills and Thrills Music Festival. As part of the festival, the ensembles were adjudicated by members of the Toronto Symphony Orchestra and professors of the Faculty of Music at the University of Toronto. The students competed with twelve other schools from across Ontario and played extremely well. Both ensembles received ratings of "Excellent" and made Richview very proud!

As we come to the end of another year, we are very excited for the next school year 2002-2003. Next year will be filled with concerts, festivals and workshops. Thank you to all of the parents and friends of our Richview students. Your continued support is much appreciated.

BOY'S BASEBALL
The highlight for baseball at Richview this year was Joey Votto's selection by the Cincinnati Reds as the 44th pick overall in the amateur draft. This is a tremendous honour and opportunity for Joe and we wish him all the best. Unfortunately we have to be content with individual successes this year as the team was upset by Etobicoke 8-3 in the final. David Gallo, Brian Rutledge, David Hurst and Dan Duperrouzel deserve recognition for outstanding pitching performances this year.

SWIM TEAM REPORT

The last time I reported to the Review, the Richview Swim Team was on its way to Brantford, Ontario to compete at this year's OFSAA swim championships. Knowing that many of our dedicated fans/readers would be left in suspense after my last article, I decided to report to the Review one last time.

This year, Richview demonstrated an immense amount of talent and skill at OFSAA. The team experienced one of its OFSAA firsts, when Amanda MacNeill won the gold medal in the senior girls 100m backstroke. This is an amazing accomplishment for Amanda as well as the Richview Swim Team as a whole. This type of excellence has never before been achieved in Richview Swimming and thus Amanda must be commended for her amazing talent and superb show of sportsmanship. Amanda truly exemplifies the spirit of Richview as well as the Richview Swim Team. Special congratulation also go out to Krystin Zafra who placed 9th in the senior girls' 100m backstroke, to Kuo-Yu Tong an Kuo-Bao Tong who placed in the top 15 in their respective events and to the relay teams of Robyn Lippett, Alexandra MacNeill, Esther Kim, Jennifer Knebel and Janice Creighton, Amanda MacNeill, Sarah Ketcheson, Krystin Zafra who also placed well in the finals. I would like to congratulate everyone on their fine achievement, and although everyone could not be mentioned, all of our team members tried their best and placed marvelously well at OFSAA. Seeing as this is my last year at Richview, I would like to give a grand farewell to all this year's team members as well as a large thanks to our student coaches Kuo-Yu Tong, Kuo-Bao Tong and Lauren Tucker as well as our teacher coaches Ms. Pereira and Mlle. Holowatch. This year has been one of the best years of Richview Swimming. Good luck to all future members and a big thanks to all those in the past who worked hard to make the team what it is today. Wishing you a safe and happy summer,

Maria Bagovich (Team Manager)

TDSSAA CHAMPIONS - VBALL

Over 80 teams competed in the Toronto senior girl's volleyball league in 2002. Out of all these teams, Richview emerged an uncontested number one for the third year in a row. (That's since the beginning of the new mega board.)

The season saw trips to Ottawa, London and Chatham where members of the team picked up a variety of awards: Liz Maloney, all star hitter; Alicia Pyke, all-star setter; Tara DiGiuseppe, all-star passer; and Kendall Milne, tournament MVP.

In March, the team competed in the OFSAA "AAA" Championships in Waterdown. Despite an 11th place seed (unbelievable) the team finished second in its pool, losing a close match to Borden (Ottawa). It went on to play Villanova (Windsor) in the quarterfinals. After losing the first game, the girls stormed back to take the second, but were narrowly defeated in the third. Our hopes dashed, the girls put on brave faces, shook hands and headed for home, medal aspirations doomed.

Congratulations to this magnificent team that came so close in one of the best fields seen in Ontario high school volleyball.
